Wheeler Engineering FAT Torque Wrench Screwdriver Kit
R2,039The Wheeler Engineering FAT Torque Wrench Screwdriver Kit is a handy accessory for avid shooters.
Most red dot sights come supplied with a Weaver / Picatinny mount which is great if you are mounting it on an AR platform or rifle which already has an accessory rail.
If you are going to be mounting a red dot sight on a handgun then you need to be aware that at the bottom of the red dot is a pattern of holes for screwing the red dot to a mounting plate. The screw pattern may vary from one red dot to another. Red dot mounting plates don’t usually come supplied with the red dot sight, you will need to source these separately.
Huntalot Online Hunting Shop has the widest selection of red dot sight mounts for sale in South Africa including a universal plate for mounting a variety of red dot sights on Glock pistols.
Mounting options on a handgun are limited. Red dot sights don’t typically come supplied with mounting plates for handguns. There are a few options available to you.
With the rise in popularity of using red dot sights on handguns, firearm manufacturers have started introducing Milled Out Slides (MOS) for the purpose of mounting a red dot sight on a handgun. A good example of this is the new Glock Gen 5 Pistols with MOS slides.
If your pistol does not have a MOS slide you can consider having your slide milled out. There are a few companies in South Africa that can do this for you. The downside of going this route is that once the slide has been milled out there is no going back, you can’t un-mill the slide. If you have a change of heart down the line and want to revert back to open sights you will have a permanent cut out on your slide. If you decide to upgrade your red dot to a different make or model then you may have compatibility issues due to different screw patterns between the various red dot sights.
There are universal red dot sight mounting plates available that come with a range of screw patterns to match that of the most popular red dot sights. You fit them to your handgun by removing the rear sight and replacing it with the red dot mount. The red dot sight is then screwed onto the mounting plate.
If you have a sight removal tool you can quite easily do this yourself. In fact you can still do it without a sight removal tool. You can tap out the rear sight using a light hammer and wooden dowel or similar to prevent scratching or damaging the sight and handgun. Lightly tap it until the rear sight is fully out and similarly you can fit the mounting plate in its place using the same method.
Take a look at the DEFCON Tactical Red Dot Base Plate for Glock Pistols. This is a universal red dot mount compatible with a number of Glock pistols and accommodates a variety of popular red dot sights.
Tip 1
Use a torque wrench to ensure you don’t over or under tighten the screws. If you over tighten you run the risk of the screws shearing off with the recoil when firing your handgun. Under tighten and the red dot will go flying off the handgun at some point. Refer to the red dot installation guide for the recommended torque to apply.
Tip 2
Apply Threadlocker or Loctite to the screws. This will ensure they do not work themselves loose while firing the handgun. Use the blue Loctite and not the red variety. If you apply red Loctite you may never get the screws undone again.
Tip 3
When tightening the screws push the red dot sight forwards to ensure the screws are flush and tight up against the screw holes. This prevents any forward creep over time where the violent recoil backwards forces the red dot forwards.
Another benefit of red dot sights is that eye relief is not a factor. The red dot sight can be mounted to the rear of the rifle closer to your eye or further forward towards the front of the rifle. Either position is fine as you can still acquire the target quickly regardless of where on the rifle is mounted.
The size of the dot is not affected regardless of where the red dot sight is positioned, be it further forward or closer to the eye.
Mounting the red dot sight more forward tends to be the common preference, but it is your decision to make. You need to consider the following:
You can run a magnifier behind the red dot sight
You may be more accurate at longer distances due to parallax
You have better view and awareness of your surroundings outside of the site
Reduced muzzle flip with the weight distributed forwards
You may find the dot a bit faster
Better balance of rifle as the weight is further back
